The two things a Cyprus garden punishes you for getting wrong
These aren't reasons you can't garden yourself — they're the specific, local traps that catch DIY owners out, and the clearest case for a trained eye on the garden.
Cyprus averages about 500 mm of rain a year, and from June to August rainfall is almost negligible — under 5% of the annual total. A Cyprus garden is kept alive by irrigation and design, not by summer rain.
The red palm weevil (Rhynchophorus ferrugineus) has been established in Cyprus since 2006. It kills mature Phoenix palms from the inside, and external symptoms often appear only once the palm is beyond saving — which is why inspection has to be routine, not reactive.

Keep the everyday work you like — the mowing, the watering, the pottering — and hand over the parts where a mistake is costly: the irrigation, the palm protection, the correctly-timed pruning, and cover for the months you're away. You keep the pleasure and the connection; the risk and the technical load stop being yours.

Absolutely — if you live at the property, are physically up to it, and the garden is reasonably simple, the everyday work (mowing, watering, tidying, light pruning, planting) is well within reach and can be genuinely enjoyable. DIY runs into trouble with the specialist and time-critical tasks, and when the garden has to keep going while you're away. Many owners land on a hybrid: do the pleasant routine themselves and bring in a professional for the technical work.
In cash terms, usually yes — you avoid the labour cost. The full picture is less clear once you count your time, buying and maintaining tools, green-waste disposal, and above all the cost of mistakes: a mistimed prune, an over- or under-watered bed, or a red palm weevil caught too late can cost far more than the maintenance would have. DIY is cheapest for a simple garden you can manage well; it gets expensive when things go wrong.
The high-risk and technical ones: red palm weevil prevention and treatment, diagnosing and repairing irrigation, large or high tree work, and anything requiring regulated products or specialist equipment. These are where a mistake is costly or dangerous, and where local knowledge and the right kit make the difference. The simple, low-risk routine is where DIY makes the most sense.
Getting the water and the timing wrong. Watering at midday loses much of it to evaporation; watering in the evening leaves foliage damp overnight, which the coastal humidity turns into fungal disease. Close behind is pruning at the wrong time of year, and missing the early signs of red palm weevil until a mature palm is already lost. None of these are obvious unless you know the local calendar — which is exactly what a professional brings.
It's strongly advisable. The red palm weevil has been established in Cyprus since 2006 and kills mature Phoenix palms from the inside, often before any external sign appears. Effective prevention and treatment need correct identification, timing and the right products — a DIY attempt frequently comes too late to save the palm. Regular professional inspection is the reliable way to catch it early.
You can't DIY a garden from another country, so absentee owners need either a reliable neighbour arrangement or, more dependably, a professional on a schedule. A crew keeps the garden watered, cut and monitored, catches failures between visits, and sends a photo report — so the garden is composed when you arrive rather than a rescue job. This is the single clearest case for hiring out rather than doing it yourself.
