What IP65 actually means on an outdoor light

Two digits carry the whole promise. Here is what each one certifies, in plain language.

IP65 is an ingress protection rating with two digits. The 6 means dust tight, no dust enters the housing at all, which is the highest solids rating there is. The 5 means the housing withstands water jets from any direction. In practice: Cyprus dust storms, winter rain, irrigation spray and coastal salt moisture all stay outside the electronics. Every lamp in our range is IP65.

Why the dust digit matters most in Cyprus

Cyprus air carries fine dust for a good part of the year, and dust inside a light fitting ends it, it coats electronics, holds moisture against them and blocks seals from ever closing properly again. Dust tight is the digit that makes an outdoor light a permanent fixture here rather than a seasonal one.

The water digit covers the realistic wet cases, driven winter rain, a hose during garden cleaning, sprinkler overshoot every single morning. Jets from any direction is a harder test than any of those.

The honest limits

IP65 does not mean submersible. A lamp that ends up at the bottom of the pool is outside its rating, submersion needs IP67 or IP68, which garden lights do not usually carry and do not need. The rating also says nothing about corrosion, that is a materials question, which is why housing metal matters separately.

The next questions

For splash and spray beside the pool, yes, comfortably. For a light inside the water, no, that needs a submersion rating and a different product category.

Not usefully. IP66 or 67 buys resistance to conditions a garden light never meets, usually at the cost of serviceability, sealed for life often also means sealed against battery replacement. IP65 with a replaceable battery is the better engineering trade for a garden.
