Solar lights and salt air on the Cyprus coast

Salt air is the hardest test an outdoor light faces in Cyprus. Materials decide it, not marketing.

Salt air corrodes cheap outdoor lights within a couple of seasons, it attacks thin coatings, steel screws and unsealed seams first. Lights survive the Cyprus coast when three things hold: a sealed IP65 body that keeps salt moisture out of the electronics, housings in aluminium or weathering steel, and an occasional fresh water rinse. Every lamp we install carries the first two, the third we do on maintenance visits.

What salt actually attacks

Corrosion starts where dissimilar metals touch and where coatings are thinnest, screw heads, seams, the cut edge of a cheap steel bracket. Salt spray deposits build up daily within a few hundred metres of the sea, and in Coral Bay, Latchi or Protaras that is most gardens worth lighting.

A sealed body matters more than any coating. IP65 means dust cannot enter and water jets cannot enter, which keeps the salt where it can only stain, on the outside.

Why Corten steel belongs by the sea

Corten is a weathering steel developed to protect itself. Its surface oxidises into a dense, stable patina that seals the metal underneath, so the material is designed to weather rather than designed to resist weathering. On the coast that logic wins, the finish cannot be ruined by salt because the finish is the weathering.

Our other coastal answer is aluminium, which forms its own protective oxide and carries no rust risk at all. Between the two sits most of our range.

The honest limits

No outdoor product is maintenance free on a seafront plot. Panels want an occasional wipe, housings an occasional rinse. We fold both into our maintenance visits, but a light bought anywhere and never touched again will age faster on the coast, ours included.

The next questions

Meaningfully within about half a kilometre, severely on the first line of properties. Salt carries on wind, so an exposed cliff plot in Pissouri can see more salt than a sheltered harbour garden closer to the water.

Good stainless grades cope, cheap ones tea stain within a year. The honest problem is that a shop label rarely tells you the grade. Aluminium and Corten remove the guessing.

Salt film on the glass reduces charging until it is wiped or rained off. The panel is sealed, so the effect is dirt on a window, not damage. A wipe during normal garden maintenance restores full charge.
