Garden Design & Landscaping in Tala

Three decades of luxury landscaping tailored to Tala's specific microclimate, soil, and character.

Tala is one of the most established expat villages in Cyprus — a hillside community above Paphos with sweeping sea views, cooler evenings than the coast, and a settled, garden-loving residential character. Many Tala properties were built in the 1990s and 2000s, with mature gardens that have grown into themselves over two decades. Our work here is often less about new design and more about thoughtful renovation: replacing irrigation systems that have aged out, restoring overgrown specimens, and adapting designs to the lower water budgets and stricter restrictions of the 2020s. The Tala microclimate (250-300m elevation) genuinely allows a broader plant palette than the coast — established roses, certain hydrangeas, and even modest stone fruit production all become possible. We treat every Tala project as a long-term relationship: the gardens here are not just landscaped, they are tended, refined, and re-imagined across decades.

Local Climate

Elevation provides notably cooler nights (often 4-5°C below coastal Paphos in summer). Higher humidity in winter due to elevation cooling. Frost is occasional in January at the higher plots.

Soil Character

Clay-rich limestone soils with seasonal compaction issues. Drainage requires attention; we often specify gypsum amendment to break clay structure.

Why Tala is Different

Three decades of work in this microclimate has taught us what succeeds — and what to avoid.

01

Mature gardens often have aged irrigation systems with hidden leaks and inefficiencies — modernising delivers significant water savings.

02

Clay soils retain winter rainfall longer than coastal sands — root rot risk for Mediterranean species without proper drainage planning.

03

Decades-old specimens (cypress, olive, eucalyptus) sometimes need crown reduction or replacement after reaching the limits of their site capacity.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked

About our garden services in Tala

Can you renovate an old garden rather than redesigning from scratch?

Yes — Tala renovations are one of our most common project types. We often find established gardens with excellent bones that simply need irrigation modernisation, selective removal of overgrown specimens, soil rehabilitation, and a refreshed planting palette in the perennial layers.

Why do Tala gardens sometimes have drainage problems?

The clay-rich soils retain water far longer than the coastal sands of Kato Paphos. Combined with winter rainfall on a hillside, this can cause root rot in Mediterranean species evolved for fast-draining conditions. We use gypsum amendment, drainage trenching, and raised beds to solve this.

Will a Tala garden look good year-round?

Yes — the elevation gives slightly more pronounced seasonal change than the coast, with autumn colour from species like Cercis siliquastrum (Judas tree) and brighter winter blooms from camellias and azaleas in shaded courtyards.
