Why concrete steps catch people out after dark
Poured concrete steps rarely give your eyes anything to read at night. The treads, the nosing and the landing are all the same tone, so a flight of three or four steps between a terrace and a lawn simply reads as one grey plane. Guests slow down, hold the wall, or miss a riser completely on the way back from the pool.
Owners who inherited an empty garden with a new villa often find the builder left no conduit anywhere near the stairs. Chasing cable into finished concrete means cutting, patching and a render repair that never quite matches, which is why step lighting keeps getting postponed season after season.
Then there is the Cyprus climate. Fittings mounted low beside stairs take splash from hosing down, chlorinated water from the pool surround, dust in summer and salt in the air near the coast. Cheap plastic units fade, fog up or stop charging, and a half working flight of steps is more confusing at night than no lighting at all.
Each lamp carries its own panel and battery. Nothing is trenched, nothing is metered, and the switching happens by itself at dusk.

For concrete stairs and terrace levels we work mainly with low, discreet solar fittings that wash light across the tread rather than into the eye. Final selection depends on the orientation of your steps, how much direct sun the area receives and the finish of the surrounding stonework.

Asked before ordering
Usually not. Because we work with solar fittings, there is no cable run back to a consumer unit, so treads and risers stay intact. Fixings are placed into the side wall, the planter edge or the ground beside the flight, and we agree every position with you on site before anything is drilled.
It depends on the width of the flight, the number of risers and whether there is a landing. Rather than lighting every single tread, we normally light the top, the bottom and any change of direction, then add fittings where the geometry is less obvious. Pambos sets out the plan after the free first consultation.
Cyprus gives generous winter sun compared with northern Europe, and we position panels so they catch the best part of the day. Output is naturally lower in December and January than in July, so we size the installation with that seasonal range in mind rather than for midsummer conditions only.
Angelos and the maintenance team set the fittings, check panel orientation, run them through a dusk cycle and walk the flight with you after dark so you can see the effect before we leave. Typical durations are given as ranges, since access and the condition of the concrete vary from garden to garden.
