Do solar lights work in a Cyprus winter
The short version is yes. The longer version has real numbers in it.
Yes. Cyprus has one of the sunniest winters in Europe, and a clear December day fully charges the lamps we install. What winter changes is the margin: days are shorter, the sun sits lower, and a stormy week can run a battery down. The roughly three nights of reserve our lamps hold exist for exactly that week.
What winter actually changes
Cyprus receives around 3,300 hours of sunshine a year, and the winter share of that is generous by European standards. Our street lamps need 8 to 9 hours of charging sun for a full battery in summer. In winter the same charge takes longer and some days will not complete it.
That is why the reserve matters more than the daily charge. A lamp holding around three nights means a grey Tuesday borrows from Monday's sunshine, and the light on your steps does not flicker because of one front passing through.
Placement decides winter performance
The winter sun sits lower in the south, so a panel that clears the fence in June can sit in its shadow in January. When we plan an installation we place lamps for the January sun, not the June sun. That single decision is most of the difference between a system that works in February and one that disappoints.
The honest limits
A genuine storm week, five or six heavily overcast days in a row, will dim solar lamps toward the end of it. Cyprus winters produce a handful of such weeks, and a lamp on a motion sensor stretches its reserve considerably further through them.
North facing pockets and deep courtyard shade are harder sites in winter. Sometimes the honest advice is fewer lamps in better positions, and we give it.

The next questions
Partially. Diffuse daylight still charges the panel, just more slowly than direct sun. A bright overcast day contributes real charge, a dark storm day very little. The battery reserve exists to bridge exactly those days.
No. They manage themselves. The dusk sensor switches them on when the light drops and off at dawn, and the battery electronics protect against deep discharge. Winter needs no intervention from you.
Cyprus cold does not. The lamps are rated to operate down to minus 10 degrees, and coastal Cyprus rarely approaches zero. Heat is the harder condition for lithium batteries here, not cold, and that is a battery replacement question, not a winter one.
