How many lumens does a garden path need

Less than the packaging wants you to believe, and the right amount depends on the job.

A garden path needs a few hundred lumens per light, spaced so the pools of light just touch. We install 460 lumen posts on paths and nobody has ever asked for more. Driveways are a different job, there 3000 lumens on a 3 to 4 metre pole every 8 to 10 metres is the standard that lights tarmac evenly.

The working figures we install by

Marking a threshold or gate: around 280 lumens reads as a confident lantern. Walking a path: 400 to 600 lumens per post, every 4 to 6 metres. Lighting a terrace corner to eat by: around 2200 lumens from one post. Lighting a driveway or road: 2800 to 3000 lumens per lamp at 3 to 4 metres height.

These are the specifications of the lamps we actually sell and fit, not laboratory values. The pattern behind them is simple, light for the task at the height of the task.

Why more lumens often looks worse

Brightness without height creates glare, a bright point your eyes fight instead of a surface you can see. A 3000 lumen source at knee height would be unpleasant to walk past, which is why big numbers belong on poles and small numbers belong beside paths. If a path light draws attention to itself, it is too bright or too low.

The honest limits

Lumen figures compare poorly across shops. A bare LED figure, a fixture output figure and an honest measured figure can differ by half. Treat any figure without an IP rating and a battery specification next to it with suspicion, including ours if you ever catch us doing that.

For decorative marking, yes. For comfortable walking, it is on the thin side, which is why our dedicated path post carries 460 lumens. Below a few hundred lumens you see the light but not the ground.

Every 4 to 6 metres for our path posts, adjusted on site so the pools of light just meet. Wider spacing creates dark gaps that defeat the purpose, tighter spacing starts to look like a runway.

Warm, 3000K, wherever people sit or look. Neutral, 4000K, where they step or park, because it renders edges more sharply. We deliberately mix the two on one property.
