Do solar lamp posts cope with Cyprus wind

The wind question is really a footing question. Poles do not stand by optimism.

They cope, provided the installation respects the wind rather than hoping about it. Our street and park lamps stand on 3 to 4 metre poles set in concrete footings, which is where the engineering actually lives, and the smaller garden posts sit low with little sail area. Coastal fronts in Cyprus gust hard a handful of days a year, and the footing is sized for those days, not for the average afternoon.

Why the footing is the product

A pole in wind is a lever, and everything depends on what the lever pushes against. Set in a proper concrete footing, a lamp post treats a gusty front the way a road sign does, which is to say it ignores it. Pushed into bare soil, the same post starts leaning by the first winter, which is the fate of most cheap sets and the source of most of the doubt.

This is also why the poles are part of an installed service rather than a courier box. The lamp is aluminium and steel; the stability is concrete and judgement.

Where wind actually bites

Exposed coastal plots, ridge lines above Peyia and Tsada, and funnel gaps between buildings see the strongest gusts. There the plan leans on lower heads, on placing tall poles in the lee of structure where the design allows, and on honest spacing rather than maximum height for its own sake. Inland courtyards barely notice wind at all.

The honest limits

A once in years storm can damage anything standing outdoors, tiles and trees included, and we do not claim immunity for a lamp post. What we claim is narrower and checkable: correctly set footings, low sail area on the small posts, and placement that was decided by someone who has watched Cyprus weather work on gardens for years.

The panels on our heads are integrated into the lamp body rather than hung beside it, so there is no separate sail flapping on a bracket. What wind mostly does to a panel is coat it in dust, which is a cleaning matter, not a structural one.

The light decorative pieces, yes, and they can move with the seasons. Anything with height or real mass gets a footing, because a leaning lamp reads as neglect, which is the exact opposite of what lighting is for.
